Light Tape® Battery Backup Emergency Lighting System

The Light Tape® Battery Backup Emergency Lighting System was originally designed and produced by Lister Electrical of York, and installed at The National Trust’s Nunnington Hall in North Yorkshire. The system is designed to provide a battery backup to operate Light Tape® as an Emergency Egress Light in case of mains power failure.

Light Tape® Battery Backup Emergency Lighting System includes a mains input to a 12V transformer, which in turn runs a trickle charging unit attached to a 12V 4Ah backup battery.

In application should the mains power be cut off a relay switch immediately connects power from the backup battery to the Light Tape® DC Power Supply to drive the Light Tape®, providing sufficient light to exit the building avoiding trip hazards in the event of an emergency.

The backup system also features an override switch that can be used to operate the Light Tape® directly from the 12V transformer providing ancillary lighting.

In tests, the 12V 4Ah battery drove 5m of 25mm (1″) Light Tape® for 12 hours without needing to be recharged.

Light Tape® Animation helps to raise awareness of escalator safety

A Light Tape® Animated Pictograph can offer a new and more effective method to really get escalator users safety ‘dos n don’t s’ across and noted by the general public, because it makes the signs much more visual and therefore more eye-catching.

Most of the general public do not even register the safety pictographs which have to be displayed by law at the top and bottom on every escalator in the country a fact borne out by the high compensation payouts in recent escalator injury cases.

The Light Tape Animated sign offers something different to help prompt people to be more aware of the hazards of misusing and abusing this every day form of transportation between floors in Department stores, Airports, Exhibitions, Underground and train stations and within Leisure Parks etc.

How does it work: Rather than simply having the usual sticker on the side of the escalator showing, in pictures, what you should and should not do while using the moving stairway, the Light Tape Animation version would provide a sign showing the usual ‘do n don’t’ picographs but this time with the added benefit of light, with the pictures lighting up on a rolling on/off, on/off sequence to attract the eye to the hazard sign. This would also draw attention to each of the accepted/unaccepted behavior restrictions rather than them being overlooked due to a static mundane presentation.

Light Tape® Animations are only 1mm thick, light and very flexible, they can be fixed in place with double sided adhesive or sandwiched between glass or perspex for extra protection.

A Light Tape® Animated Sign is similar to neon, but far more realistic because it operates within a high-resolution printed image. The image is divided into several different sections that can be illuminated separately from one another. Each section can be programmed and sequenced to create the appearance of movement within the static printed image.

A Light Tape® Animated Sign provides an eye-catching, moving electronic display that utilises high quality, full colour digital images yet is as thin as a credit card! It is energy efficient – less than 60 watts per square meter, is virtually unbreakable, vibration and shock resistant, easy to install, very portable, and does not contain glass.

Applications include: Safety Signage, Branding Campaigns, Point of Sale Advertising, Trade Shows, Mobile Advertising, Entertainment and Sporting Events, Night Clubs and Bars, Hotels, Casinos, Concerts, Cinemas, Kiosks etc.

Light Tape® Illuminates Nunnington Hall Stairs for Exit in Emergency

Lying in the valley of the river Rye in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, Nunnington Hall country house, a Grade I listed building, is owned, conserved and managed as a visitor attraction by the National Trust.

Nunnington hall is open to the general public and contains four flights of poorly illuminated stairs to the rear of the building, when the question of safety was raised an imaginative solution had to be sought. Being a grade l listed building any proposed slight change to any part of the structure proves virtually impossible to get approved. However health and safety regulations make it clear that adequate safety lighting provision should be afforded to staircases etc, so creating a dilemma as to how the regulations should be adhered to and implemented sympathetically.

It was decided that banisters and safety lighting using Light Tape® should be incorporated in to the stairways to satisfy modern day safety requirements. Of course the resulting solution had to be in keeping with the period setting while also providing the specific requirements of health and safety regulations.

Nunnington Hall Emergency Exit Safety Egress Lighting using Light Tape®

Light Tape® Safety Lighting at Nunnington Hall

Rustic wooden banister rails were crafted to provide the necessary assistance and stability when ascending and descending the stairs. Metal brackets were fashioned to look like the kind that would have been made at a blacksmiths forge in keeping with the technology of earlier times. However, when the safety, egress lighting was discussed it was felt that this should be unobtrusive and visible only when in use.

Light Tape® was considered to be the best solution for this specific requirement. Due to the product being so thin in nature, less than 1mm thick, and available in any length up to 100m, with both low power and low maintenance, Light Tape® offered a singularly unique solution that proved easy to incorporate in to the underside of the wooden banisters satisfying all the requirements and more.

A shallow channel was routed along the centre of the underside of the wooden banister, deep enough for a length of Light Tape® with an electrical connector fitted at one end to lay. Supplied cut to length, sealed and connected ready for use, the Light Tape® and connector was fixed into place using a 3M double sided adhesive tape. The metal brackets were then also fixed on to the underside of the banister to either side of the routed channel containing the Light Tape®, at intervals along its length. This done the banister including the Light Tape® was fitted to the walls either side of the stairs. A single wire was then able to be discretely routed to a battery backup power unit so in an emergency the egress lighting on the banisters would come on should the main electrical supply be interrupted.

Light Tape®  uses less than one twentieth of the power and is half the price of Neon and Cold Cathode display lighting, it is flexible, easier to install and maintain, reduces light pollution, produces no waste heat or infrared light, is fully recyclable, uses No Gas, No Glass and No Mercury and, does not effect night vision.

The work at Nunnington Hall was contracted by: National Trust, York and installed by: Lister Electrical, York.

The first Nunnington Hall was mentioned in the thirteenth century and the site has had many different owners. The oldest parts of the surviving house, which now form part of the west front was built in the sixteenth century by William Parr. The present building is a combination of seventeenth and eighteenth century work, though most of Nunnington Hall seen today was created during the 1680s by Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, its then owner.

Nunnington Hall is a popular visitor’s attraction featuring sheltered walled garden, with spring-flowering organic meadows, orchards and flamboyant peacocks, art and photography exhibitions during the year and the amazing Carlisle Collection of miniature rooms.

The DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) has recently been updated to provide extra protection to the Partially Sighted, putting emphasis on both the illumination of Stairs and making columns and pillars in public areas more visually apparent. Light Tape can assist in both these areas with cost effective simple solutions.

Light Tape® Illuminates Foster Court, University College London

Light Tape® has been used once again to create a unique display, this time on the entrance to Foster Court, at University College London.

Foster Court Morse Code in Light Tape

Already used in 2009 on the external walls of the Darwin building at the college featuring the words “Darwin Walk” in Morse code, the finished result proved so effective that it has been replicated for Foster Court.

For more information on Light Tape® go to: http://www.lighttape.co.uk

The display features the words “Foster Court” in Morse code, with all the “dots” and “dashes” being made from Light Tape® in its “Cut out Shapes” form. The attached photographs show the display at night and, even with the ambient lighting from the windows and other light sources the Light Tape® shapes certainly do the job of providing a bright and colourful finishing touch to this newly renovated walk way.

This particular project, once again, required the energy saving Light Tape® product to be presented in the form of “cut outs”, where all the pieces were custom cut from Light Tape® Extreme Series electroluminescent panels as required and encapsulated in a Honeywell Clarus film. The figures In this case, were 300mm circles, “dots” and 300mm x up to 2m lengths, “dashes”. Each “cut out” was fitted with a heavy duty 3M Resin Sealed IP68 Rated Connector including wire, ready for installation. Vibramount adhesive strip was applied, in turn, to each of the prepared chosen sights for the installation of the shapes; which were then individually positioned on to the vibramount and sealed into place under, sized, clear polycarbonate sheeting then screwed to the receiving wall, providing additional protection of the Light Tape® shapes from the elements. Once fitted in to place all of the shapes were wired back to the mains supply through channeling fixed across the top of buildings wall via a Light Tape® Smart Driver™ power unit. The lighting is controlled by a photocell further ensuring sensible power usage.

It is fair to say that had the shapes been supplied using the traditional form of signage, florescent display boxes, the end results would have proved bulkier at around 75mm thick as opposed to 6mm using the Light Tape® alternative. The light tubes would have been visible through the front of the sign even through the coloured plastic covering, causing the light distribution to be uneven and creating uneven colour, so aesthetically the overall effect would have been much less pleasing and the display would have been easily damageable. The maintenance costs would also be higher and the ongoing power consumption would be at least 20 times greater (this estimate is conservative).

The original design of the Light Tape® display at Foster Court was done by Max Fordham Consulting Engineers, the installation was carried out by Alpine Works Limited, both based in the London.
