Light Tape® Illuminates Nunnington Hall Stairs for Exit in Emergency

Lying in the valley of the river Rye in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, Nunnington Hall country house, a Grade I listed building, is owned, conserved and managed as a visitor attraction by the National Trust.

Nunnington hall is open to the general public and contains four flights of poorly illuminated stairs to the rear of the building, when the question of safety was raised an imaginative solution had to be sought. Being a grade l listed building any proposed slight change to any part of the structure proves virtually impossible to get approved. However health and safety regulations make it clear that adequate safety lighting provision should be afforded to staircases etc, so creating a dilemma as to how the regulations should be adhered to and implemented sympathetically.

It was decided that banisters and safety lighting using Light Tape® should be incorporated in to the stairways to satisfy modern day safety requirements. Of course the resulting solution had to be in keeping with the period setting while also providing the specific requirements of health and safety regulations.

Nunnington Hall Emergency Exit Safety Egress Lighting using Light Tape®

Light Tape® Safety Lighting at Nunnington Hall

Rustic wooden banister rails were crafted to provide the necessary assistance and stability when ascending and descending the stairs. Metal brackets were fashioned to look like the kind that would have been made at a blacksmiths forge in keeping with the technology of earlier times. However, when the safety, egress lighting was discussed it was felt that this should be unobtrusive and visible only when in use.

Light Tape® was considered to be the best solution for this specific requirement. Due to the product being so thin in nature, less than 1mm thick, and available in any length up to 100m, with both low power and low maintenance, Light Tape® offered a singularly unique solution that proved easy to incorporate in to the underside of the wooden banisters satisfying all the requirements and more.

A shallow channel was routed along the centre of the underside of the wooden banister, deep enough for a length of Light Tape® with an electrical connector fitted at one end to lay. Supplied cut to length, sealed and connected ready for use, the Light Tape® and connector was fixed into place using a 3M double sided adhesive tape. The metal brackets were then also fixed on to the underside of the banister to either side of the routed channel containing the Light Tape®, at intervals along its length. This done the banister including the Light Tape® was fitted to the walls either side of the stairs. A single wire was then able to be discretely routed to a battery backup power unit so in an emergency the egress lighting on the banisters would come on should the main electrical supply be interrupted.

Light Tape®  uses less than one twentieth of the power and is half the price of Neon and Cold Cathode display lighting, it is flexible, easier to install and maintain, reduces light pollution, produces no waste heat or infrared light, is fully recyclable, uses No Gas, No Glass and No Mercury and, does not effect night vision.

The work at Nunnington Hall was contracted by: National Trust, York and installed by: Lister Electrical, York.

The first Nunnington Hall was mentioned in the thirteenth century and the site has had many different owners. The oldest parts of the surviving house, which now form part of the west front was built in the sixteenth century by William Parr. The present building is a combination of seventeenth and eighteenth century work, though most of Nunnington Hall seen today was created during the 1680s by Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, its then owner.

Nunnington Hall is a popular visitor’s attraction featuring sheltered walled garden, with spring-flowering organic meadows, orchards and flamboyant peacocks, art and photography exhibitions during the year and the amazing Carlisle Collection of miniature rooms.

The DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) has recently been updated to provide extra protection to the Partially Sighted, putting emphasis on both the illumination of Stairs and making columns and pillars in public areas more visually apparent. Light Tape can assist in both these areas with cost effective simple solutions.

New Light Tape® Portable Rechargeable Battery Packs

Light Tape UK announces the launch of the new portable, quick recharge, compact, battery units to drive the Light Tape® product in its various portable applications. The new units have been specifically developed to address the existing limitations associated with driving Light Tape using portable battery technology.

Light Tape® Rechargeable Battery Packs

Light Tape® Portable Rechargeable Battery Packs

Light Tape® has been used for many applications in the event, exhibition, entertainment and safety industries but the main barrier to its more widespread use in these sectors has been the size and poor performance of current battery technology.

Where the addition of light for wearable/non wearable applications is require for example: Safety Jackets etc in industry; Stage, TV and Movie Costumes and props in entertainment; Event Displays, Mobile Bars, Ice Buckets, Poser Tables, Table centers etc; Free Standing, Portable exhibition stands and Brochure Stands for exhibition, product display and POS Units (the list of application could go on)

At present, a DC power unit has to be supplied separately to the battery, switch and charger which can make the solution bulky and difficult to conceal if for instance the Light Tape® is required to be lit for an extended time, so requiring a larger power unit. Or, time consuming if a smaller battery was used that needed to be recharged every few hours, depending on the overall size and power needs of the Light Tape® being driven.  However the new Portable battery packs confirm that “good things” really do “come in small packages”.

Light Tape® PDC60 Battery Pack and Charger

The new portable, quick rechargeable battery unit has both the power driver and battery encased in the one unit. It has a vastly extended battery life, is rechargeable and comes in three sizes. The new portable battery unit features an on/off/flashing switch plus red light indicator, a belt clip, it has a vastly extended battery life and is rechargeable. The smallest (PDC24) battery unit can drive up to 24 Square inches of Light Tape®. The PDC60 battery unit can drive up to 60” Square inches of Light Tape® and the PDC120 battery can drive up to 120 Square inches of Light Tape®. All of this adds up to an extremely viable solution that ticks all the boxes and opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the use of affordable, practical, portable Light Tape® displays.

Light Tape®

Light Tape® uses less than one twentieth of the power and is half the price of Neon and Cold Cathode display lighting, it is flexible, easier to install and maintain, reduces light pollution, produces no waste heat or infrared light and is fully recyclable, uses No Gas, No Glass and No Mercury.

Light Tape® is the longest and brightest electroluminescent lamp in the world. It can be supplied in a range of colours and widths, in lengths up to 100m. Driven by specially devised power supplies, it can be used in flashing or steady state modes in indoor or outdoor applications. The design is safe with no mercury, no glass to break or gas to escape and it’s highly energy efficient too. In application, it is easy to install, requiring virtually no maintenance compared to alternative lighting technologies.

Light Tape® is being used in both the Korean and Brazilian Subway systems as Emergency Egress Escape lighting it is also being used around the world in Safety Garments and is presently on test illuminating level crossing barriers.

“Light Tape® was found to be more visible in smoke than LEDS after a smoke test performed by the San Paolo Fire Department. The Fire Commission found Light Tape® to be clearly visible and provided enough illumination to navigate in emergencies”. Brazilian Subway, San Paolo

A NASA study for the Air Force on Electroluminescent Lighting  showed the technology was easily visible from distances over five miles away. Notably Light Tape®  light penetrates fog, smoke, snow, haze and other normally poor visibility conditions.

What is Light Tape®?

Light Tape® is made up of metal ribbon coated in Sylvania phosphor and encapsulated in a Honeywell laminate. Light Tape® has no glass, no gas, and no mercury/heavy metals and so is user and environment friendly. Light Tape® provides an 85% – 90% energy saving against other commercially available light sources such as Neon and Cold Cathode and due to its thinness (just 0.5mm thick, as thin as a business card) and being lightweight, affords inherent flexibility of use providing a neater, modern, space saving alterative that is easy to install with little to no maintenance and has a long working life.
